“Butterfly Ops” – Jen Doyle

AMAZON LINK: https://amzn.to/2t29GyU

3rd Person, Dual POV. One of my favourite reads of 2018.

I knew going in that this book would be a hodge-podge of genres.

It’s not just paranormal but with an urban fantasy feel and a strong second chance romance storyline.

Our Heroine Lyndsey is a low key superhero. She has preternatural skills, but here are no costumes and definitely no capes!

Our Hero Ian is a widower, single Dad with 4 kids, working for the military in a paranormal special ops division.

There’s also a strong “Found Family” vibe going on, that often happens when you have people in life or death situations.

It should have just said “ALL THE THINGS YOU LOVE”, it was just missing puppies.

This is a book about 2 grown-ups, they have flaws, they’ve messed up, there were massive misunderstandings. They’ve definitely lived their lives between their break up in their early twenties and now in their mid thirties.

There’s no pretension that they have all their ish together. Each of them is worried about screwing up their own lives and the lives of those in their immediate orbit if this reconnection goes awry.
I personally enjoy it when Main Characters don’t fix everything with one conversation that reconciles their relationship. Even in your mid thirties you’re not always going to have the emotional maturity to put all the hurts behind you neatly and move forward. That they have to keep revisiting it feels natural and normal.

There is significant emotional growth for these two characters as they work together to solve these unnatural crimes

Given all the reasons their break up happens, its knock-on effects and where they are today in life, the continual navigation of Ian and Lyndsey’s new relationship makes sense.

If I were to aliken this to a TV Series, I’d say; take Wynnona Earp and throw in some Seal Team Six and Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders.

Definitely book 1 of 3 in the series. Cannot be read out of order, no conclusion of the romance until book 3.

I have been lucky enough to read all 3 books in the series and hope that this spins out into a longer series, because I would read all of them, given the solid nature of all the secondary Characters

#CurrentRead “Consumed” – JR Ward

Releases Oct 2nd. 3rd Person. Multi POV.
Everything I love in a book. Found Family. Curmudgeonly Hero. Kick Ass Heroine. Competence P0rn. Suspense. Broken, fallible people.

I really, really enjoyed JR Ward’s Bourbon Kings Series. There was a kind of grandeur, & vastness to it, within the confines of a familial unit. I likened it to Dallas/Dynasty; It’s about one family, but also their impact on the world around them. They knew they had impact, but some members knew and cared, others knew and truly didn’t care.

This had the same feeling of expansiveness but within a “Found Family” this time. As the first in a series you know you’re going to get introduced to a whole cast of characters, and as a romance reader it’s always fun to try and spot the sequel bait. However, you also have to be careful to keep the main pairing central to the story. This story wasn’t just Danny and Anne’s story however, they were consistently central, the lynch pins holding this tale together. Their internal and external conflicts,  and their relationships with other characters, were realistic and well balanced.

Given the subject matter, I’d liken it to Dick Wolf’s Chicago (Fire/PD/Med) franchise with the overlaps of those Emergency Service providers giving JR Ward the perfect breeding ground of characters and storylines. 5 Star Read from me, can’t wait for more. (Also a few clicks & I’ve discovered JR Ward also writes/wrote Contemporary Romance as Jessica Bird)

ARC received via NetGalley in return for an honest review.

3rd Person. Dual PoV w/miniscule other PoVs.
Post-apocalyptic/Dystopian Ice Road Truckers. Think Mad Max meets Hanna with a smidge of the Terminator thrown in.
Fan Cast would be Icy Jason Mamoa as the Assassin Hero, Saoirse Ronan Heroine just trying to survive,  Dichen Lachman as Yuriko and Andy Serkis as the Arch Villain.

This was Fantastic! Loved the twists and turns Definitely recommend.
There’s also a Novella & a second book, but this is a complete story with a HEA.

Newly released Ex-Con. Single Mother Heroine.
Sal is only a few months out of prison, working 2 jobs, trying to keep his nose clean. Vanessa is working on her CPA, living with her Daughter & Grandmother. Her late husband was a gang member.
This had a refreshing take on living in East LA amongst Latino Gang Culture. Very involving secondary characters with intriguing sub-plots. Second book doesn’t release until 2019 though, definitely added to my TBR!

3rd Person Multi-PoV (Mostly Hero & Heroine). More Romantic Thriller than Romantic Suspense.
Reclusive ex-Cult Member Heroine. Ex-Detective Hero drawn into new Government Department (HDD). The Heroine is the subject of their first case.

Excellent Set up for this New Series, thoroughly enjoyed it. Can definitely see the other HDD characters being the sequel bait. Plus, there’s gonna be a longer story arc with the Department Leader’s pet project.

1st in a Series. Loved the Set up for the the rest of the Heroes
3rd Person. Dual POV.
Titled Heroine. Former Soldier (still peerage) Hero.
She fancies herself in love with his Cousin. The Cousin only wants her for her fortune. He’s hired as her “bodyguard” to keep the Cousin away at public events.
He’s curmudgeonly. The Third Son of a Duke essentially ostracized from his family in favour of the cousin. Lots of buried, unreconciled hurts. Found Family with his Military Brothers.
She’s an utter delight! Can’t always keep her thoughts in her head. He’s a man of few words. Fun & Charming Opposites Attract Historical Romance.
